Egypt is known for its ancient monuments, such as the Pyramids and the Sphinx, the Nile River, and resorts like Sharm El-Sheikh. In order to promote tourism in their country and enable visitors from around the world to easily receive travel authorizations, the government of Egypt has introduced an eVisa system in 2017. It allows travelers to apply for a visa online in a matter of minutes instead of visiting the Egyptian Embassy.

Do Swiss Passport Holders Need a Visa for Egypt?

Almost all foreign nationals need a visa in order to be able to travel to Egypt for tourism purposes. Switzerland is one of 46 countries eligible for an Egypt online visa.

For transiting through Egypt, it is possible to obtain a transit visa, if the stopover time is anywhere from 6 to 48 hours. For stopovers shorter than 6 hours, there is no need for a visa to Egypt from Switzerland, however, travelers are not allowed to leave the airport. For any transfers longer than 48 hours, travelers need to apply for an Egypt tourist visa for Swiss citizens.

Swiss nationals who intend to travel to Egypt from Switzerland for work must obtain a work permit or business visa and are not eligible for an online visa.

Egypt Visa Requirements for Swiss Citizens

There are several prerequisites for applying for an Egypt visa for Swiss citizens. Egyptian visa requirements include:

  • Having a valid Swiss passport with at least a couple of blank pages for entry and exit stamps
  • Having a valid payment card for paying the visa fee (all major debit and credit cards are accepted)
  • Having an active email address for receiving the eVisa approval

Egypt visa requirements for Swiss citizens include the passport validity of at least 6 months following the start of the trip. If this is not the case, the applicant needs to obtain a new passport before applying for a visa. In case the application has already been submitted, the candidate needs to apply again using the new passport number.

It is advisable to apply for an Egypt visa from Switzerland as early as possible and at the latest 7 days before the travel date in order to allow for any processing delays.

There is another alternative for obtaining the tourist visa last-minute, namely visa on arrival at the Egyptian border. It is important to keep in mind that this option may entail long waiting times. What is more, the visa on arrival must be paid in cash since debit and credit cards are not accepted as payment methods for this type of visa.

Apply for Egypt Visa From Switzerland

Egypt visa application for Swiss citizens is a very easy online process that only takes a few minutes to complete. Swiss applicants are asked to fill in the application form that they can find on the Egypt Online Visa website. They need to provide both essential personal and passport details in the form, such as full name, contact information, date and place of birth, nationality, passport number, dates of issue and expiry of the passport, as well as the dates of traveling to Egypt.

Visitors are also asked to choose between a single-entry and multiple-entry eVisa. The first option allows only one entry to Egypt with a maximum stay of 30 days, within 3 months from the date of visa approval. Travelers who hold a multiple-entry visa are permitted to enter the country as many times as they wish during a 6-month period. Here as well, each stay must not exceed 30 consecutive days.

Before proceeding to the visa fee payment through a secure online system, applicants have a chance to verify and confirm that all the provided information is correct. It is mandatory to provide all the required information in a truthful manner, otherwise, the visa may be delayed or denied.

The visa is received by email in a matter of days after submitting the application form. If the visa approval is not received after 7 days, applicants should check their spam folder and verify that the email address they provided in the form is correct.

Please note that the Egypt eVisa must be printed and presented in its paper form together with other travel documents at the Egyptian border. Furthermore, travelers must keep a copy of their eVisa throughout the entire duration of their stay in the country.
