Following the uprisings in Egypt, the North African country has seen a sharp uptick in its tourism numbers, with the majority of those visitors coming from within the European Union. However, not all of that increase can be attributed to Europe. In fact, in 2019, Egypt saw a 38.2% growth in the number of Japanese tourists.
Egypt offers more than just a trip to visit the pyramids, and since 2015, Egyptian travel authorities have been making a concerted effort to make the country more accessible with the introduction of an Egyptian e-Visa for travelers from most countries around the world, including Japan.
The Egyptian eVisa for Japanese passport holders is designed for those travelers who wish to visit the country for short stays. There are two varieties of the visa available to Japanese citizens, and the travel authorization that each traveler selects will be dependent on their itinerary and their needs. Read on to find out more about how to apply.
Do Japanese Passport Holders Need a Visa for Egypt?
Yes, Japanese passport holders who wish to visit Egypt for tourism must hold a valid Egyptian visa. The kind they have and how they acquire it depends on their trip.
The following are some of the possible cases and scenarios a Japanese national can encounter when planning to visit Egypt and applying for a travel permit.
Do Japanese Nationals Need a Transit Visa?
There is no need for Japanese passport holders to have a transit visa should they only be using Egypt for a layover.
In the case that a traveler has an onward flight between 6 and 48 hours, they will not be asked to provide a visa.
If they have an onward flight within 6 hours, then they will not be allowed to leave the airport without a valid tourist visa.
Can Japanese Citizens Get a Visa on Arrival?
Yes, there is a tourist visa on arrival option for Japanese citizens. However, it is not the most efficient and flexible option and has a number of drawbacks compared with the Egyptian eVisa for Japanese citizens.
Firstly, the visa on arrival is only available in a single-entry, 30-day variety. There is also a fee, which must be paid in person, in cash. Lastly, there is no telling how long the line will be.
Egyptian eVisa Options for Japanese Travelers
There are two types of Egyptian tourist eVisas available to Japanese travelers.
- Single-entry eVisa: This eVisa is valid for up to 30 days and only allows for one entry into Egypt. If the Japanese traveler leaves the country, they must re-apply for a second visa.
- Multi-entry eVisa: As the name implies, travelers from Japan have more flexibility with this option. They are allowed to enter and exit Egypt multiple times within the six months that the visa is valid. However, no single stay can ever exceed 30 days.
How to Apply for an Egypt Online Visa From Japan
The application process for Japanese citizens is far more straightforward than in-person applications. In filling out the online application form for the Egyptian e-Visa, applicants will be asked to provide the following:
- Name as it appears in their passport
- Contact details including phone number
- Passport expiration date
- Passport number
- Date of birth
- Expected arrival date
- The purpose of their trip to Egypt
Once the application has been thoroughly double-checked and submitted, there is a wait time of between 4-7 days before the eVisa will be issued via the email address you have provided. After the visa has been issued, travelers have up to three months to enter Egypt before the visa becomes invalid, so there is no need to wait until the last minute.
After the eVisa has been issued, travelers must print out a hard copy and carry it with them to their Egyptian border crossing. Border officials will ask to see the printed version of the visa.
Egypt e-Visa Documents Required from Japanese Citizens
In addition to the details that are required when filling out the application form, there are a handful of requirements that each applicant must provide when submitting their application for review.
Each applicant must have the following:
- A Japanese passport with six months of validity remaining from the date they leave Egypt
- A scanned copy of the passport information page that clearly shows the photograph and pertinent details
- A current email address to issue the eVisa
- A debit or credit card to pay the application fee
