Egypt has remained one of the most visited countries in North Africa and the Middle East for a long time. Year after year, German passport holders travel to Egypt for tourism and ever since 2015, the options they have for obtaining a visa have changed. It is now possible for German citizens to apply for an online visa or eVisa before they travel to Egypt. The Egyptian eVisa was designed to make the entire process for receiving a visa easier than it previously was.
How to Get Egypt Visa from Germany
German passport holders are required to have a visa before entering Egypt. Since Germany is a member of the European Union, they are among the countries with multiple options for obtaining a visa.
German citizens are still able to apply for a visa on arrival once they get to an Egyptian border. Visas on arrival require a fee that needs to be paid in cash as border authorities are not able to accept debit or credit cards. The disadvantage of this type of visa is that the process goes very slow and there is sure to be a long line.
The eVisa option eliminates the need for German travelers to wait in long lines at the border as passengers holding the eVisa will be fast-tracked through border control. Another benefit of the visa is that it does not require citizens from Germany to wait in long lines at the Egyptian consulate or embassy in their country. Instead, Germans can apply entirely online from anywhere in the world where they have access to the Internet.
There are a few options that Germans have for the type of tourist e-visa they apply for. The first option is a single-entry visa, which allows German travelers to enter Egypt one time only. Once they are inside the country, they are allowed to travel freely for a maximum of 30 days. If they wish to exit Egypt before their 30 days are up, they need to apply for an additional visa before re-entering the country. A multiple-entry visa allows for German citizens to come and go from Egypt as they please within a period of 180 days as long as the total number of days per entry does not exceed 30 days.
If a German passport holder will be transiting through Egypt, they may be eligible for a transit visa. A transit visa allows travelers who do not hold a tourist visa to leave the airport while awaiting their onward flight, provided that their flight is more than six hours and fewer than 48 hours from the time they go through border control. If their flight is in fewer than six hours, they need to stay in the airport, and if their flight is more than 48 hours away, they need to obtain a tourist visa.
Egypt eVisa Requirements for German Passport Holders
Citizens from Germany applying for the eVisa are required to provide the following:
- A valid German passport that has at least six months validity remaining from the date of entry into Egypt
- A scanned and digitized copy of the passport information page, which will be uploaded after the application is submitted
- A valid debit or credit card in order to pay the application fee online
- A valid email address so that the final decision can be sent via email
All applications for the Egyptian eVisa need to be submitted with sufficient anticipation so that the authorities can make their decision. This means that at the absolute latest, applications must be submitted one week before the traveler’s date of entry. Once the visa has been granted, it is important to remember to print out the eVisa to show it to border authorities.
If any German citizen holds dual-citizenship, they must ensure that they apply for the eVisa with the same passport that they intend to travel with as the eVisa is tied not only to the passenger but also to the specific passport.
Additional eVisa Application Requirements for Germans
In addition to the requirements listed above, German passport holders need to be prepared to give additional information for their eVisa application:
- Full name as it appears in their passport
- Date of Birth
- Passport number, date of expiration, date of issue
- A current telephone number
- Expected arrival date
Applicants should also be prepared to give details about any criminal record as well as up to date information regarding their state of health. Travelers need to ensure that they double-check their applications before submitting them as any untruthful information could cause their Egypt eVisa application to be denied.Egypt Visa for German Citizens
