Egypt remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in not just the Middle East but the entire world. The North African country attracts millions of tourists each year from across the globe, and in 2015, authorities announced that tourists from nearly every country (including the United Kingdom) would be required to obtain a visa before entering Egypt. Some of those countries are eligible for an online visa (eVisa), which will allow them to quickly complete the visa application process.
Do UK Passport Holders Need a Visa to Visit Egypt?
British citizens must hold an Egyptian visa before entering the country. Depending on the purpose of their trip, as well as the duration, passport holders from the United Kingdom will be able to apply for an eVisa before their intended travel to Egypt.
The two ways that they can obtain a tourist visa are online, via the eVisa application, and upon arrival. Certain countries*, including those within the European Union, are allowed to apply for a visa upon arrival, should they not wish to or be able to fill out the eVisa application beforehand. In such instances, it’s important for travelers to remember that they must pay the application fee in cash as debit and credit cards will not be accepted at any Egyptian port of entry.
The benefits of applying for the eVisa are that the easy to fill out online form negates the need for British citizens to visit a consulate or embassy in their home country or wait long hours in a line once they arrive on Egyptian soil. In addition, because the entire application process is completed online, it is not necessary that the traveler is located within the United Kingdom while they are applying.
The eVisa comes in two distinct varieties: A single-entry visa, which allows the visa holder to enter Egypt one time and stay for a period of 30 days. The second kind is a multiple-entry visa, which allows the visa holder as many entries as they wish within a period of 180 days (from the date the application is accepted) as long as the cumulative number of days per entry inside Egypt does not exceed 30 days.
It is not necessary for travelers from the UK who are transiting to a separate destination within 48-hours to obtain a visa for Egypt. Those citizens with transit times between six and 48 hours are allowed to exit the airport, those with transit times less than six hours are required to stay within the airport until their next flight departs.
*At the time of the writing of this guide, the UK was still a member-state of the European Union and therefore eligible for a visa on arrival.
Egyptian e-Visa Requirements for UK Citizens
Meta: An extensive guide containing all the information needed for citizens from the United Kingdom to apply for and receive tourist visas for travel to Egypt.
In order to apply for the Egyptian eVisa, British citizens must be prepared to submit the following information:
- A valid UK passport with at least six months’ validity from the intended date of entry into Egypt
- A digital copy of the passport’s main information page, which will be uploaded following the submission of the application
- A valid debit or credit card, which will be used to pay the application fee
- A valid email address as the final decision regarding the application will be communicated via email
Although the application is designed to be completed quickly and easily, it is necessary that applicants submit their eVisa application a minimum of seven days before they intend to enter Egypt. This will give the Egyptian authorities sufficient time to review the entire application and render a final decision. Once the eVisa has been approved, travelers need to print out a hard copy of the eVisa and carry it with their passports as they will be required to show it to border authorities.
Travelers who hold dual-citizenship must travel with the same passport that they applied for the visa as the eVisa is linked to the specific passport provided and not just to the individual traveler.
