Thanks to the online visa for Egypt (eVisa), tourists from several countries can obtain permission to enter Egypt completely online. This has completely eliminated the need to visit an Egyptian embassy before leaving or join long queues at the airport for a visa on arrival.
The eVisa for Egypt is a short-term authorization that can only be used for tourism purposes. For that reason, it has limited validity and allows foreigners to stay in the country for a specific amount of time.
However, travel plans can change and foreign visitors may find themselves in need of extending their stay in Egypt. After all, with both natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some of the most famous archaeological attractions on the planet, there is much to see and do in Egypt.

How Long Can I Stay in Egypt with a Tourist Visa?
The validity of a tourist visa depends on the specific type of permit the traveler has applied for. The easiest and fastest way to get a visa for Egypt is by applying online.
Those who intend to remain within the Egyptian borders during their holidays should get a single-entry electronic visa. This travel authorization allows only one stay in Egypt for a maximum of 30 days. However, it remains valid for 3 months after its date of issue to allow enough time for visitors to reach Egypt.
Some prefer to explore neighbouring countries and discover all that the Middle East has to offer during their time abroad. In that case, it’s advisable to obtain a multiple-entry Egyptian visa. This permit grants foreigners the possibility to leave Egypt and re-enter it several times throughout its validity period. The multi-entry visa for Egypt is valid for 6 months but allows a maximum stay of 30 days per entry.
Can I Extend My Visa in Egypt?
Tourist visa holders are offered the chance to extend their permit should the need arise. In fact, this can be achieved in 2 different ways.
Apply for a new eVisa from abroad
Visitors whose eVisa is expiring can leave Egypt, apply for a new one, and return once it’s granted. As mentioned above, the eVisa is the quickest entry permission to obtain for the country.
Most eVisas are approved within a day or two, although applicants should allow up to 7 days — perfect for those who’d enjoy exploring neighbouring areas.
There is no limit to the number of eVisas a specific foreigner can obtain for Egypt, as long as they always meet the eVisa requirements and their visa’s terms and conditions.Obtain a New Egypt Visa
Extend a visa while in Egypt
There’s also the option of renewing the visa in person while remaining in Egypt. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to do so online without leaving the country. Since the in-person application requires long queues at the only available office in Cairo, many prefer to temporarily leave the country and apply online in minutes.
Applications for visa renewals are submitted at the Egyptian Passports, Immigration, and Nationality Administration office in the old Police Academy in Abbasiya, Cairo. The office is open between 8 am – 2 pm ever day except Friday (Saturday is for pickups only).
Documents required to obtain a visa extension in person are:
- A valid, eligible passport
- The eVisa with which the foreigner has entered the country
- The extension fees in cash. Several fees apply.
- The Egyptian address the applicant is staying at
- Passport-sized photo
It will be necessary for most applicants to return twice to the office. The first time, foreigners are required to fill out the application form, the security form, have their photo and fingerprints taken, and submit all the relevant documents. They also need to pay the first application fee.
On the second day, they will pay further fees and receive their visa extension.
The visa will be granted for 3 further months (no other options are available). The visa extension is officially called Foreign Residence Card and takes the form of a plastic ID card.
What Happens If I Overstay My Visa in Egypt?
Overstaying a visa is never a good idea. Overstayers are not only breaking the terms and conditions of their specific eVisa but also the Egptian visa and immigration policies. This can have serious consequences, including a fine.
Those who decide to overstay their visa may even be prevented from obtaining an Egyptian travel permit in the future. If a visitor realizes that their visa has already expired, they should get in touch with the Egyptian authorities as soon as possible.
